HEX Panel Live Event

Decoding Aussie Work Culture with HEX

Communication is never just about words. It is shaped by culture, context, and the expectations we carry into every interaction. At the Live Panel Event, Decoding Aussie Work Culture with HEX, we explored how understanding these differences can create stronger connections in the workplace.

We were joined by some incredible voices who brought insight, humour, and realness to the conversation:

🎤 Miriam Deliva, CEO of The Press Run
🎤 Chris Hoffmann, HEX Co-founder and culture decoder
🎤 Ramsey Tawil, Communications pro and sharp-as MC
🎤 And me! Emmanuella Grace, Communication obsessive and human connection expert

Together, we unpacked the unwritten rules of Australian workplace communication, from building relationships and understanding humour to navigating informal conversations and creating genuine connection.

Small talk can be challenging for the best of us, but when you are navigating a culture where communication styles, humour, and workplace expectations are different from your own, those everyday interactions can become even more complex.

It was also wonderful to see some of my clients in the audience and share this conversation with people I have worked with in other contexts. It is always rewarding to see familiar faces engaging with ideas around communication, connection, and workplace culture.

Because workplace culture is often shaped not only by what we say, but by the assumptions we bring into how we communicate.

A special shoutout to Purvang Dave, whose awesome blog post helped me remember how to spell everyone’s names correctly! What a legend. It is a great reminder that events like this are not just about the people on stage. They are about the wider community of people who capture, share, and continue the conversation afterwards.

Key Takeaways

  1. Connection often starts before the “important” conversation – Small talk is not just filler. It is a way we build trust, create familiarity, and establish relationships before moving into deeper conversations.
  2. Communication styles are shaped by culture and experience – What feels natural to one person may feel confusing or uncomfortable to another. Understanding different approaches creates stronger collaboration.
  3. Authentic connection does not require changing who you are – The goal is not to imitate another communication style. It is to understand the environment, adapt with confidence, and bring your own strengths into the room.
